The three goals of the YWCA of Berkeley/Oakland are the elimination of racism, the economic empowerment of women, and leadership development. These provide the motivational force behind all of the programs at the YWCA of Berkeley/Oakland. Our mission is to meet the changing needs of women from diverse backgrounds by empowering them to fulfill personal, career and humanitarian goals.

  • Young Women's Mentor Program: Matches young women transitioning from foster care to independent living with women mentors from the Berkeley and Oakland area.

  • Racial Justice Program : Education, community service, volunteer, and empowerment programs in local high schools, middle and elementary schools and Head Start programs.
  • Youth Mentor Program: Matches UC students with at risk middle school students.
  • Dance & Fitness: 32 international dance and fitness classes.
  • Career Center: Career counseling, resume clinics, resource library, job listings, workshops.
  • English in Action: English language tutoring for foreign visitors and families.
  • The Centre: Resources and multicultural exchange for women and their children.
  • Student Volunteer Board: Volunteer projects for the campus and community including Shadow Day, Week without Violence, Food and Toy collections, World YWCA events and much more.
  • TechGYRLS: Computer skills for 9-13 year old girls.

The YWCA Berkeley/Oakland (also known as The University YWCA, The YWCA at the University of California, Berkeley) began in 1889 to meet the needs of women and girls in West Berkeley. In the 117 years since, the YWCA Berkeley/Oakland has greatly expanded its reach and programs, several of which have received community and national awards. Over 600 volunteers regularly volunteer in YWCA Berkeley programs, which serve both Berkeley and Oakland, as well as other nearby areas.
