FYA Walk Around Lake Merritt & Resource Fair May 20
 

Online registration for the FYA Walk Around Lake Merritt is now open! Click here to register for this great event. Come out on May 20th for a morning walk to support youth in their transition from foster care to adulthood. Listen to great music and browse the Resource Fair. Bring youth! Free registration for all current and former foster youth up to age 24. Registered walkers will receive a beautiful t-shirt.

An IPod Shuffle will go to the walker bringing in the highest contribution. Other great prizes include a year's supply of Peet's Coffee and tickets to A's games. Supervisor Keith Carson, a Walkathon sponsor, will speak just before the start of the Walk.

All proceeds go directly to support the work of FYA.

FYA Professional Development Training RSVP Today
 
...for FYA’s Resources in the Community and Staff Networking event, which will be held Tuesday, May 9th, from 9:30 until 12:30 at ILSP, 2647 International Blvd, Suite 312, Oakland.

This training is chock-full of useful information!

Back by popular demand: Mr. Charles Shetter, who will explain all about MediCal eligibility and how to get youth connected the way they are supposed to be.

The Berkeley/Oakland Center for Independent Living will be on hand to talk about SSI benefits and the services available at their center for youth with disabilities.

And there is more. This is the opportunity to meet your counterparts at other agencies, share ideas, and support each other’s work.

Fostering Art Opening Reception: Today
 
Fostering Art will be having their 2006 Art Exhibit on May 4th and 5th at Root Division Gallery.

Fostering Art is a photography program for current and former foster youth that teaches art as an act of conscious self-expression. When students are behind the camera, they are in charge of how they are seen and what parts of their world they are willing to make public. The students in the Fostering Art program have an artistic tool, that they have immediate access to, which allows them to explore and control the expression of their image, vision, and voice.

Project Bridge At Laney College: Registration Open
 
May is a good time for youth/young adults to do the paperwork for
registration, financial aid, EOPS, etc. to be ready to start college
classes at Laney College in mid-August. Project Bridge is a basic skills learning community.

Covenant House Community Heroes Dinner: May 18
 
Covenant House California will host their 2nd Annual Bay Area Community Heroes Awards Dinner on May 18th at the Lake Merritt Hotel.

The Covenant House California Community Hero Awards celebrate individuals who make a positive difference to our community, lead inspirational lives, and demonstrate a concern for homeless and at-risk youth.

This year's honorees are MTV News Correspondent, Sway Calloway; star of stage and screen, Delroy Lindo; and Vice President of Wells Fargo, Dale Golden.

Assembly Select Committee on Foster Care Hearing on Emancipation Friday May 12th
 
The Assembly Select Committee on Foster Care is holding a public hearing on Emancipation Friday, May 12th, in San Francisco. Youth and adults, come and have your voices heard by the lawmakers from Sacramento. Let’s show the State Officials and the public that we care about what happens to youth when they leave foster care and that we have ideas to improve the system.

Date and Time: May 12, 2006 from 1pm-4pm.
Location: San Francisco California State Building, Milton Marks Auditorium (located in the basement) on 455 Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco, California.
