Happy Thanksgiving

FYA Members and Friends, as Thanksgiving approaches, we pause to consider the year that is quickly coming to an end. Despite the state of the world, there is much to be thankful for in our mission to improve outcomes for foster youth. This year, THP-Plus became 100% state funded and Prop 1C passed. Cal State East Bay, San Francisco State, San Jose State and now UC Berkeley all have scholars programs, and on November 9th, Community Colleges from 9 counties came together to determine how to better serve foster youth on their campuses. This year and every year, FYA members come together thoughtfully and collaboratively to tackle issues that impact the young people we serve.

Thank you, and have a wonderful holiday. The bulletin will return on November 30th.

--Amy Freeman

ConVening of Foster Youth Allies

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Convening of Foster Youth Allies on November 9th. More than 80 participants from 9 counties learned about the new Foster Youth Success Initiative from the state California Community College System Office and made connections with people from their counties and their own schools. Each county left with an action item to improve outcomes for foster youth in their local community colleges.

Thank you to the Pottruck Family Foundation for funding this convening, and to the Alameda County and Oakland Workforce Investment Boards for co-hosting with FYA.

GSA Network Leadership Training

Save The Date! GSA Network Leadership Training! (Oakland)

You are invited to a GSA NETWORK LEADERSHIP TRAINING

This FREE event will be held on December 9 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. It includes breakfast and lunch!

So what is a GSA Network Leadership training?

Youth from various Gay Straight Alliances come together for a FUN, interactive, peer-to-peer training that provides students with the skills to fight homophobia and transphobia in schools. Led by other GSA leaders from around Northern California, the training will show students how to start and run a kick-ass GSA.

Topics include:

* How to run a GSA meeting
* Outreach, membership building, and diversity
* Understanding gender and sexual orientation
* Understanding laws that protect LGBTQ youth in schools
* How to take action against slurs, harassment, and discrimination in your school.

This is a great opportunity to network with other GSAs in your area while learning some new skills to strengthen your club.

WHO: GSA members, potential members, and GSA advisors
WHEN: Saturday, December 9, 2006, 10am-4pm
WHERE: Oakland Public Library
125 14th Street
Oakland, CA 94612

GSA Network values the participation of adult allies in our fight against oppression and injustice in schools, and thus welcomes GSA Advisors and other adult allies to the leadership training. That being said, we ask that they help us to maintain the youth focus of this training.
