FYA Professional Development Training 9/12
 
RSVP now for the next FYA Professional Development Training: “Helping Youth Prevent Pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Talking to Youth about Human Sexuality” This training will be held on Tuesday, September 12th, from 9:30 to 12:30 at the ILSP Office, 2647 International Blvd., Suite 312, Oakland. This training is a joint project of FYA, Seneca Center, and Chabot FKCE.

FYA Membership Meeting: September 15th
 
The next FYA membership meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 15th from 9:30 until 11:30 at the Alameda County ILSP Office, 2647 International Blvd, Suite 312 in Oakland.
 
Openings for Foster Youth at BAYC’s THPP
 
IMMEDIATE OPENINGS FOR FOSTER YOUTH AT BAY AREA YOUTH CENTER’S TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PLACEMENT PROGRAM (RAFA)

A Transitional Housing Placement Program (THPP) is where youth still in the foster care system get hands-on experience living on their own. The RAFA (Real Alternatives for Adolescents) program provides youth with the opportunity to build the skills necessary to be independent. To be eligible for RAFA, youth must be 16-18 years old, currently in foster care and currently attending ILSP. Gay Straight Alliance-------GSA At the TeenZone at the Oakland Public Library
FOR: Teens aged 13-17 who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Questioning and also for their straight allies and friends!

WHEN: 5:00-6:00 pm on the second Wednesdays of each month (September 13, October 11, November 8)

WHERE: Oakland Main Library 125 14th Street
2nd floor, room 219 (in the Magazines and Newspapers room)

Come hang out and watch films, talk about books, and plan fun activities!

This is an event by some of the teens from the Henry Robinson Center (transitional housing shelter)
New World Focus Photography Exhibit at the Oakland Public Library

Join us for a reception for the teen photographers complete with food, fun, and art in the TeenZone in the Main Library 125 14th Street on September 7, 2006 from 6:00-7:30 pm. The exhibit will be up for display for the month of September in the TeenZone. Please call Jessi if you have any questions 510-238-7233.

 
RFP for October 20-21 After School Conference
 
OUSD is inviting proposals to present at the Oakland Unified School District’s Oakland SUCCESS After School Conference. The conference will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21, 2006. This two day conference is for staff working with elementary, middle, and high school youth in after school programs at school sites throughout Oakland. Workshops will target frontline staff as well as program coordinators and OUSD site staff involved in After School.

HEY Training: Foster Youth and Special Education
 

"Foster Youth and Special Education"
When: Wed. September 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00noon
Where: San Francisco ILSP, 225 Valencia


Street and meter parking available. 10 minute walk from 16th Street BART.
As always the cost is Free for youth and HEY members, and $15 for non-member agencies. However, there is a special fee waiver for group home staff and residents so please encourage them to come - this is a very important training especially for them.

About the training:
Ken Simpson from San Francisco Human Services Agency is the former Special Education Advocate for Juvenile Dependents and brings a lot of first hand experience and knowledge about the education system and foster youth needs.
The training will consist of a general information session followed by an extensive question and answer session. Mr. Simpson will discuss sample cases of foster youth with special needs (cognitive and emotional) and the resources available to them by the Department and school district.

Save the Date: A Community Forum on Foster Youth Transitions to Employment will be held at the State Building in Oakland on December 4th. Join others who are supporting successful employment opportunities for transition-age foster youth. Hear from foster youth about what would best help them succeed in the workplace. Learn about promising practices in Alameda County and across the state.
