Campaign for Safe Transitions Update

$50 million for Housing for former Foster Youth! Important organizing meeting on Thursday, August 31st!

Please attend an organizing meeting on Thursday, August 31st to learn about Proposition 1C: the Housing and Emergency Shelter Trust Fund Act of 2006.

On May 4th, the California State Legislature passed Senate Bill 1689, known as the Housing and Emergency Shelter Trust Fund Act of 2006. SB 1689 places a $2.85 billion bond measure on the November 7th ballot to expand housing for California's low-to-moderate-income families.

Of the $2.85 billion, $50 million has been earmarked for housing for California's emancipated foster youth. If passed, this will be the largest investment in housing for former foster youth in the history of California, helping thousands of former foster youth.

Please join the Campaign for Safe Transitions as we work with partners statewide to raise awareness about the need for housing for former foster youth and the opportunity provided by Proposition 1C. We will have state leaders from the Proposition 1C campaign along with others to address key questions:

• What exactly is included in the housing bond?
• If it passes, how will the funding be administered?
• How would this funding relate to THP-Plus?
• What technical assistance is available to counties and community-based organizations for THP-Plus and the bond funds, if passed?
• How can I help with the campaign?

108 Sun Salutations for Covenant House: Sept. 23

It's a big Yoga fest: 108 Sun Salutations in Sharon Meadow, Golden Gate Park, on Saturday, September 23rd at 10:00 a.m. to benefit Covenant House California. This year's OM for Kids features you and hundreds of other yoga-loving folks who come together to perform 108 Sun Salutations in unison! It's a glorious event--all to raise awareness and much-needed funds for homeless and at-risk youth served by Covenant House California.

With the help of easy-to-use tools provided via the web, all participants ask for sponsorship from friends and family beforehand--at least $108, that is, $1 per Sun Salutation. All money raised supports the work of Covenant House California.
They’ll have numerous instructors on hand to work with participants, whatever their level of familiarity with yoga. Free yoga classes will be available before the big day to help you prepare for the event. At the yogathon they’ll have massage therapists, juices and food to provide you with relief. So come one, come all! And bring friends and family to support a great cause! For more info, visit www.omforkids.com.
