Over the last year, students from McClymonds High School in West Oakland have researched, filmed, and produced two videos on issues key to their lives and their neighborhoods. The students from McClymonds High School are first-time filmmakers. Not only did these projects allow them to discuss issues that deeply affect them and their communities, but the production process also taught them skills to apply to future career ambitions.

The first film, part of an initiative through the Department of Justice, addresses youth violence while the second explores youth involvement in redevelopment in the Bay Area. With support from the UC Links program and through a partnership between UC Berkeley's Center for Cities and Schools (CCS) and the Bay Area Video Coalition, these 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students have created two moving 10-minute documentaries featuring young people, community leaders, city and school officials, and participants in the Y-PLAN, a CCS program on redevelopment that partners with local public schools.

Both of the videos can be viewed in their entirety at http://citiesandschools.berkeley.edu.

BREAKING THE SILENCE: co-presented by LYRIC
The ten short digital stories in Breaking the Silence are powerful tales of both the successes and failures of the foster care system for a group of ten former foster youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. Over the course of a four day workshop at the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley, these youth shared their stories and learned to edit them into moving, heartfelt (and sometimes heartbreaking) personal videos. Through these youth's thoughtful, honest, and insightful words, we are given a glimpse of what it is like to be an LGBTQ foster youth as well as what we can do to better support our youth in state care.

The workshop was organized by the Y.O.U.T.H. Training Project of San Francisco State's Bay Area Academy and the Center for Digital Storytelling with support from the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

LYRIC is co-presenting this event.

Tickets are available at Superstar Satellite video store located at 474 Castro Street (between Market and 18th Street in San Francisco), online at www.frameline.org/festival, by phone at 925.866.9559 and by fax at 925.866.9597.
