FYA Training June 13th:
Permanency & Connections for Older Youth

Please join FYA on Tuesday, June 13th, from 9:30-12:30, for an excellent FYA Professional Development Training presented by Kevin Campbell: “Permanency & Connections for Older Youth .” This training will be held at the ILSP Office, 2647 International Blvd., Suite 312, in Oakland.

Trainer Kevin A. Campbell has worked for more than 20 years with seniors, adults, families and children throughout the country. Over the past 17 years he has been instrumental in developing permanency focused services for youth in the out-of-home care system. In Washington state, where Campbell first helped to develop the “family finding” model, 253 out of 288 troubled children (many of whom had previously been deemed to have no family connections) moved in with relatives within a six-month period in 2003. He visits as many as 10 cities a week teaching child welfare professionals how to track down kin.

Click here for a flyer to post in your agency.

This training is a joint project of FYA, Seneca Center, and Chabot FKCE. To RSVP, email Amy Freeman at afreeman@fosteryouthalliance.org or call 510-444-4025, x235.

FYA Brown Bag Series for Management Staff: July 6

As this training will be held during a holiday week, we would like to know well in advance how many people are planning to attend. Please RSVP to Amy Freeman at afreeman@fosteryouthalliance.org or call 510-444-4025, x235, by June 20th if you would like to attend.

This training is a joint project of FYA, Seneca Center, and Chabot FKCE.

Campaign for Safe Transitions Update

If you have not yet sent a letter in support of SB 1576, please click here to download a sample letter. To recap, SB 1576 passed out of the Senate on May 30th. We are one step closer to having THP-Plus become a fully-funded state program. This progress is due to the great efforts you all have made, through support letters, legislative visits and testimony at committee hearings.

The next step for the bill is to be heard by the Assembly Human Services Committee. Please take a moment to print a letter of support on your letterhead and fax it to Noreen Evans, Chair of the Assembly Human Services Committee, at 916-319-2107.

The Governor's May Revise demonstrates the Governor's support for THP-Plus. The budget includes $9.3 million to reduce the county share of THP-Plus to 30%. This is tremendous progress toward increasing access to the program.

Thank you for your continued support.

It's My Life: Postsecondary Education and Training Guide

Casey Family Programs has just developed a new, free publication. The It's My Life: Postsecondary Education and Training Guide provides social workers, child welfare administrators, tutors, mentors, teachers, and advocates with valuable strategies and resources for assisting students to prepare for college and be successful at the postsecondary level. The guide especially targets students from foster care, students with disabilities, and independent students. However, the guide will be useful for working with all students who need guidance and assistance to prepare for and be successful in college.

Click here for a flyer with additional information on the guide. It is available as an active PDF file (www.casey.org/Resources/Publications/IMLPostsecondaryEd.htm) or in hard copy (email requests through postsecondaryedguide@casey.org.)

Digital Bridge Academy at College of Alameda

Click here for a flyer for the Digital Bridge Academy at College of Alameda. The DBA program’s mission is to assist students to succeed in college, and later on to become employable in high-wage, professional careers. DBA targets Latino and African American prospective students who are not looking at college as the next step, and who will likely continue on to have mediocre jobs and face many social problems due to a lack of a college education.

Student Characteristics:

• At-risk of dropping out/not continuing on to college
• Do not typically see themselves going to college
• Do not understand their own capabilities/strengths
• Not exposed to the sciences in high school
• Unsure of career possibilities, professional opportunities

The course offers them academic preparation, self discipline and self management skills, and the skills necessary to be effective in college and in knowledge-based careers. The faculty is especially trained in a holistic approach to help students develop self-efficacy and potential, and motivate them to engage in learning. These students are then accelerated to college level performance on several dimensions in an intensive one-week program offered July 24 – 28th from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

DBA is new at College of Alameda, but Diego Navarro, the founder of DBA, has had tremendous success at Cabrillo College. For more information please check out the following website:
