| Call For Participants In Study |
|
| |
Participants are needed for a project concerning former foster
youths' experiences with the educational system. This particular component
of the project calls for participants who were in care for at least one year
of their life and is concerned with ethnicity; if you are interested in
participating in the larger study on education, but not in the study of
ethnicity, you can still participate.
For this portion of the project, the researcher, Zandree Stidahm, is hoping to interview at least two participants of different ethnic backgrounds who were born before 1950 and at least two participants of the same constraint born anytime after 1950.
All that is asked of participants is one scheduled interview (in person, by phone, or by email, your choice). All personal information will be kept completely confidential (no names or other identifiers will be released in the project). All ethnic voices are
important to this project, and any time you could give to share your
experiences (with ethnicity or with education in general) for this project
would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully this study will begin a conversation
among educators concerning how to improve educational contexts for foster
children. Please share your voice in this effort.
Compensation:
All participants in this study will receive a ten dollar gift card to
Chili's Bar and Grill simply for participating in this project.

| California Granted Title IV E waivers. |
|
| |
| Click here to read an article about the Title IV E Waivers granted to California, which will allow counties to spend some of their federal foster care money on services designed to prevent children from going into foster care in the first place and help those who do end up in the system return safely to their families or find a permanent home faster. |

| New documentary: "Race is the Place" |
|
| |
|
Click here for a flyer about a screening of the documentary Race is the Place and an afternoon of outstanding Youth Performances.
Going beyond the buzzwords of "multiculturalism" and "diversity", RACE IS THE PLACE is a hip-hop fast moving documentary jam, where the political becomes personal. Using spoken word, song and just plain rants, a diverse group of performers and visual artists dare to examine one of the most emotionally explosive issues in American life, busting stereotypes by using humor and poetry to say things traditionally left unsaid.
YOUTH PERFORMANCES
A dynamic group of Oakland middle and high school youth will perform solo and collaborative spoken word, rap, and theater pieces centered around issues of race and identity. Their words and rhythms will share stories, challenges, and hopes that represent Oakland's diverse community. The youth performances are a culmination of a four day intensive writing workshop. Come and hear their perspective on race and identity in Oakland today.
