| FYA Walkathon & Resource Fair: May 20 |
|
| |
| The Foster Youth Alliance is gearing up for our first fundraiser, the FYA Stepping Stones Walk Around Lake Merritt. Community members, service providers and other supporters will walk alongside current and former foster youth to raise awareness about the challenges youth in foster care face as they transition to adulthood. We are expecting to have over 100 youth at the Walk along with many community members. To maximize the impact of the event, we are hosting a Resource Fair to be held at the start and finish line.
The fair will provide an excellent opportunity for agencies serving foster youth to talk with youth about your services and engage them in participating. It will also provide a chance for organizations to recruit adult volunteers from among the Walk participants. This is an opportunity to educate community members about becoming foster parents, mentors, tutors and general supporters of your agency.
Please join us for:

| Senate Bill 1576: Letters of Support |
|
| |
The Campaign for Safe Transitions thanks everyone who has sent in a letter of support for SB1576. If you have not yet sent in a letter of support, please click here to download a sample letter.
To recap, due to the tremendous efforts of our partners throughout the state, we are making progress in expanding housing options for emancipated foster youth. Since the Campaign was launched, you have repeatedly expressed the need to eliminate the THP-Plus 60% county funding requirement. These efforts are paying off! Senate Bill 1576 (Murray, D, Los Angeles) would increase the state's share of THP-Plus funding up to 100%.
The Campaign has been building to this point for the last three years, and we need your engagement for the biggest challenge yet! Now is a critical time to demonstrate your support by sending a letter to Senator Murray. Every letter of support makes a difference. Please spread the word!

Select Committee on Foster Care:
Hearing on Transition/Emancipation Issues |
|
| |
| The next Select Committee on Foster Care hearing has been scheduled for Friday May 12, 2006 from 1pm - 4pm at the City Hall Building in San Francisco. This hearing will focus on transition/emancipation issues such as: housing, access to higher education, extending services past 18, employment services, permanency, etc.
This is a very important issue for youth, advocates, providers, and members of the legislature. The goal is to mobilize as many youth as possible at this hearing.
Members of the committee are carrying legislation to address many of the issues that have been brought up. Click here and here for the two tentative Assembly Human Services Committee Hearing Notices for which much of the Foster Care Legislation will be heard. Click here for a revised list of the foster care legislation being carried this year.
You can participate in this process by attending the hearings or writing letters of support. It is important that we get as much support and input on these measures, so these issues can be elevated and weighed in upon during the legislative process. If you have any questions about dates or specific bills you can contact Jessica Gunderson at (916) 319 - 2047or Irene Frausto, Assembly Human Services Committee Secretary at (916) 319-2089. Please pass this info on to any other interested parties.
