Campaign for Safe Transitions:
Statewide Strategy Session Dec. 9

The Campaign for Safe Transitions: Housing for Former Foster Youth is a statewide advocacy effort of over fifty organizations coordinated by FYA and Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY) in San Francisco to address the need for housing and support services for youth aging out of the system. Year one of the campaign had some important victories including the passage of AB 824, which extended the age of THP+ eligibility to 24 and SB 436 which specifically addresses the needs of parenting former foster youth. We need your help to build on this momentum for 2006 to secure additional support for emancipated foster youth.

The statewide strategy meeting will be held on Friday, December 9, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the San Francisco office of United Way of the Bay Area, 221 Main Street, Suite 300. (The office is a 10 minute walk from the Embarcadero BART station.)

The meeting will begin with a brief review of the policy landscape and progress since our initial planning meeting and will include a working lunch. Laurie Kappe from i.e. communications, a policy advocacy organization, will once again facilitate the strategy session.

Please let either Michele or Amy know by December 2 if you will be joining the meeting, either in person or via conference call. For more information or to RSVP contact:

Art and Writing Contest for Foster Youth (12-21) - Deadline: Friday, Dec 16!

Children's Law Center (CLC), in conjunction with the Foster Care Awareness Campaign, will once again sponsor the annual Foster Youth Art and Writing Contest. This is a wonderful opportunity for youth in foster care to be exposed to creative growth, enable them to be recognized for their artistic talent, and possibly receive scholarships or other awards -- along with feeling the tremendous pride that comes from having their work exhibited before the public and published in a booklet that will be distributed nationwide.

The selection committee is on a very tight timeline and the DEADLINE for receiving art and writing submissions is December 16th. All submissions must be received by then, so selected youth can participate in art and writing workshops that are planned as well as other events beginning in January. Click here for more information. NOTE: The attachment contains two pages -- an informational flyer and an application/release form. It is important that the application/release be filled out completely, so the committee can follow up with the youth selected. If you have questions about the event or the paperwork, please contact Sharon Appel at 323 980 1589 or appels@clcla.org.

Openings at Coolidge Court

Coolidge Court, a supportive housing program for low-income youth with chronic mental illness, has two openings.
