Emancipated Youth Health Project

Anika Russell, a medical and graduate student at the Joint Medical Program between UC Berkeley and UCSF, is currently conducting a research project examining the post-emancipation health care experiences and health care access of former foster youth who left foster care in Alameda County.

The project will consist of focus groups and individual interviews with emancipated foster youth, ages 16 to 24, and will explore issues related to access to health and mental health care during the transition to adulthood, in the interest of identifying barriers to care if any, and developing strategies for improving health and mental health care access for youth who have left foster care. Health and mental health service providers will also be interviewed to help identify additional issues related to access to care.

Click here for a flyer to share with emancipated youth. If you have any questions, need additional information or would like to participate in a provider interview, please feel free to contact Anika Russell at 510-219-7996.

Prop 1C on the Ballot in November

Prop 1C will provide 50 million dollars for housing former foster and other homeless youth

Proposition 1C is on the November ballot in California. One of the wonderful things that Prop 1C will do is provide $50 million to create housing for former foster and other homeless youth. The great news is that Prop 1C is polling well in preliminary polls. To maintain that early lead, the message needs to get out and the support needs to roll in. Luckily that is not as hard as it seems. Just click here to read about easy ways to get involved, including endorsing Prop 1C. For more information about the bond measure click here for a fact sheet.

Chapin Hall Report Finds Higher Pregnancy Rates Among Youth Aging Out of Foster Care

From the Chapin Hall Alert, 9.21.06

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy asked Chapin Hall to drill down into its ongoing study of youth aging out of foster care to examine the pregnancy, birth rates, and sexual behavior of youth in the child welfare system. The analysis reveals disproportionately high rates of sexual activity, pregnancy, and parenthood among these youth when compared to all teens, and those who age out of the child welfare system experience higher rates of pregnancy than older adolescents who remain in care.
